A Provo police car is parked on Center Street on Saturday, June 25, 2022.

A Provo woman was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter Tuesday after police said she struck two children with her vehicle, killing one.

Nereyda Miranda, 28, was driving out of the Brough Trailer Court in Provo with small trash bags on her hood when she hit a 3-year-old female and a 4-year-old sibling that were next to their father, who was fixing a bicycle on the side of the road, police said.

The 3-year-old was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead, and the 4-year-old received superficial injuries, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

The affidavit said Miranda was leaving the trailer court in a black GMC Yukon with her three children and had placed small trash bags on her hood to be thrown away on her way out of the trailer court.

Police said a video showed the vehicle traveling quickly, and that grocery bags could be seen on the hood, near the windshield, and that the bags likely obstructed Miranda’s view.

“Based off of the height of (Miranda) and the height of the vehicle, I do not believe the bags could have been placed further than the driver’s area of visibility since she is shorter and the vehicle is taller,” the affidavit read.

Starting at $4.32/week.
