The Utah County Attorney’s Office charged George Parker Hunter, of Cedar Hills, with manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident involving a death in Provo’s 4th District Court.
According to a probable cause statement from police, Dalton Gibbs was crossing an intersection at 2600 N and 900 West when he was struck by Hunter, who was turning right from 900 West onto 2600 North in a white Chevrolet pickup truck.
Police said a witness saw Gibbs go under the truck and gestured at Hunter to stop the truck, but Hunter completed his turn, dragging Gibbs and the bicycle beneath the truck as he continued to drive.
“Had the defendant stopped when directed to stop, (Gibbs) would not have suffered the fatal injuries he sustained,” another witness said, according to court documents.
Police said Gibbs was dragged 50 feet before becoming dislodged and that Hunter drove away with the bicycle stuck under the truck.
According to the probable cause statement, Hunter was found at the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds, where he told police he had looked left along 2600 North and saw he had room to make his turn, which he did.
“He saw the brake lights of the vehicle in front of him come on and claimed that he stopped,” court documents said. “The driver of the vehicle in front of him had gotten out of his truck and was waving his hands at the defendant to stop; that driver looked panicked. (Hunter) claimed he saw a bicycle under the other driver’s vehicle.”
Police said Hunter claimed that person waved him on so he kept driving and then heard a screeching noise under his truck. Hunter said he saw the bicycle in his rearview mirror and got out of the truck and placed the bicycle on the curb.
