Police say Daines and his wife were out for a walk near 40 E and 400 South in Springville around 6:30 p.m. when a truck pulling a trailer veered off the road and began heading toward the couple.
Daines reportedly pushed his wife out of harm’s way, but the truck hit him, according to Springville police.
Life-saving measures were performed on scene before Daines was transported to Utah Valley Hospital, but police said he died from his injuries.
Springville police shared a statement from Daines’ family Thursday afternoon regarding his death that reads:
“No words can adequately express our sense of loss at the sudden and unexpected death of our son Matthew Daines. The event that took him from us and this Earth resulted from human error, but does not undermine the power and love of the Almighty, in whose wisdom we choose to trust. In our profoundly deep sorrow, we encourage no sense of retribution to anyone.
“We ask that all persons and parties not directly involved in this tragic matter respect our need for privacy while we deal with loss and necessary arrangements, going forward.”
According to court documents, the alleged driver, Travis McIntyre, 41, of Tooele, was arrested on suspicion of 10 charges, including automobile homicide and driving under the influence, and booked into the Utah County Jail.
Police said in a probable cause affidavit they observed alcoholic beverages inside the vehicle, and McIntyre was unable to stand and perform standardized field sobriety tests.
Family members in a GoFundMe campaign started in his honor described Daines as a protector who treasured his family and loved ones.
“Thank you for honoring Matthew’s memory. We hope to carry on his legacy of goodness,” the crowd fundraiser reads.
