Utah Valley University is pictured Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025, in Orem.Utah Valley University announced Friday a plan to return to class after the assassination of Charlie Kirk on campus Wednesday forced the school’s closure through the weekend.
UVU President Astrid S. Tuminez said the school will undergo a phased return, with employees returning to campus Monday, student services becoming available Tuesday and classes resuming Wednesday.
“You have constantly been in my thoughts during this devastating time in our history,” Tuminez said in a message to UVU students and faculty. “The tragic death of Charlie Kirk on our campus on Sept. 10 has shaken our community. We have witnessed a tragic event, but in the coming days, I am confident that our core value of exceptional care will see us through as we begin to move forward.”
Thousands of people gathered at a UVU courtyard Wednesday to watch Kirk speak at his first stop on a campus tour when he was shot and killed by a gunman on the roof of a school building, officials said. Tyler Robinson, 22, is the suspected shooter and was arrested Friday.
UVU provided a list of off-campus and virtual resources available for students in the wake of the shooting, including the Rocky Mountain Clinic and BYU Comprehensive Clinic in Provo, the UVU Receiving Center and the Office of Victims of Crime, among others.
Tuminez encouraged students and faculty to use mental health services and share them with anyone needing comfort or support.
“To every student, staff, faculty and friend of UVU, please know: You are not alone,” she said. “We deeply care for you. We share feelings of shock, grief, confusion and fear as we process what happened in our place of schooling and work — a place that we all love.
“This is a defining moment for us all. May we not let hatred overshadow the goodness of our UVU community and what we stand for.”
The school also announced Friday that people who left personal items on campus will be able to retrieve them early next week.
