Gov. Spencer Cox speaks to journalists during the last day of the legislative session at the Utah State Capitol on Friday, March 7, 2025.As the investigation continues into the potential motives of Charlie Kirk’s alleged assassin, Tyler Robinson, Gov. Spencer Cox confirmed limited information Sunday about the suspect.
In an interview with NBC News’ “Meet the Press” Sunday morning, Cox said Robinson, a 22-year-old Washington, Utah, resident, had a “leftist ideology” and was radicalized by social media.
“According to his family and people that we’re interviewing, he does come from a conservative family,” Cox said. “But his ideology was very different than his family.
“Friends have confirmed that there was kind of that deep, dark internet, Reddit culture, and these other dark places of the internet, where this person was going deep, and you saw that on the (bullet) casings.”
Cox also confirmed reports that Robinson’s roommate was a “boyfriend” transitioning from male to female, and said that person has been cooperative with authorities.
“What we have learned specifically is that this person did not have any knowledge, and was shocked when he found out about it,” Cox said.
He added that Robinson has not been cooperating in the investigation.
Authorities believe Robinson shot and killed Kirk, a conservative activist, from the rooftop of the Losee Center building during a Wednesday event at Utah Valley University in Orem.
A 33-hour manhunt followed, as authorities combed security footage and sent imagery of the alleged suspect to the public.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, police located a bolt-action rifle wrapped in a towel in an area on the northern edge of UVU’s campus, and found inscriptions engraved on casings found with the rifle. One casing read “Hey fascist! CATCH! (up arrow symbol, right arrow symbol, and three down arrow symbols).” A second unfired casing read “O Bella ciao, Bella ciao, Bella ciao, Ciao, ciao!” and a third unfired casing said “If you read this, you are GAY Lmao.”
Robinson was turned over to police Friday after a family member reached out to a family friend, who then contacted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office with information that Robinson had confessed or implied involvement in the incident, Cox told reporters Friday.
The Utah County Sheriff’s Office said Robinson is currently being held in a special housing unit at the Utah County Jail and is under close watch from authorities who are monitoring his mental health.
Charges are expected to be filed against Robinson Tuesday by the Utah County Attorney’s Office, at which time more information will be released, according to Cox.
The governor said Robinson was a “normal” and “very smart” young man who got a 34 on his ACT and attended Utah State University in 2021, but dropped out after “less than a semester.”
He was radicalized after he moved back to southern Utah and was surrounded by gaming and social media, according to Cox.
In an interview with CNN Sunday, Cox was asked about using the term “leftist ideology” and was asked to be more specific.
“There were conversations that were discussed specifically about Charlie Kirk, other conversations about the direction that this was going,” Cox said. “My job is just to tell people. I really don’t have a dog in this fight. If this was MAGA and a radicalized MAGA person, I would be saying that as well. If the friends were saying that, I would be sharing that as well. That’s not what they’re sharing. I do think it is important, again, to understand how someone gets radicalized like this. And in this case, as much as people wish it wasn’t or don’t want it to be this, these are the facts that are being presented to us.”
