A Salt Lake County man is facing a handful of charges after allegedly leading officers on a pursuit through two Utah County cities.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, Johnansen Ramirez Rodriguez, 25, of West Valley City was arrested Saturday on suspicion of failure to stop or respond at the command of an officer, prohibited dangerous weapon conduct, possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence and use or possession of drug paraphernalia.
Officers from Saratoga Springs were dispatched to look into a weapons offense call Saturday afternoon after someone reported a man in Black BMW had brandished a firearm at them while they were driving, police said in the affidavit.
Officers located the BMW at a Holiday Oil gas station in Saratoga Springs. When they ordered Rodriguez to exit the vehicle, he allegedly sped off and led the officers on a “several minute long pursuit,” the affidavit said.
The chase persisted into Lehi, where Rodriguez crashed into the Jordan River near 1900 South Center Street, according to the affidavit.
At the crash site, Rodriguez was ordered at gunpoint by officers to exit the vehicle and he was placed in handcuffs, the affidavit said.
During a search of Rodriguez’s vehicle, police recovered a THC vape pen and two firearms, according to the affidavit, which also stated that officers observed a strong odor of alcohol on Rodriguez’s breath. A urine test later tested positive for alcohol, making it his second DUI in the past 10 years, the affidavit stated.
When the officers asked why Rodriguez fled, he responded with “oh because I’m DUI,” the affidavit alleges.
Rodriguez was booked into the Utah County Jail on the aforementioned charges.
