Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray speaks at a press conference Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2025, in Provo.Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray filed charges Tuesday against the man suspected of killing Charlie Kirk, and said he intends to pursue the death penalty.
Tyler Robinson, 22, of Washington, Utah, faces seven criminal charges, including aggravated muder, a capital felony, after he allegedly shot and killed Kirk during an event at Utah Valley University in Orem last Wednesday.
Gray announced the charges in a press conference at the Utah County Health and Justice Center in Provo, during which he read through a 10-page charging document that disclosed new information about the case.
Gray said he was not pressured by the administrations of President Donald Trump or Gov. Spencer Cox to pursue the death pentalty, but made the decision on his own accord.
“I do not take this decision lightly, and it is a decision I have made independently as county attorney based solely on the available evidence and circumstances and nature of the crime,” he said.
Court documents said Robinson intentionally targeted Charlie Kirk because of his political beliefs, attaching a victim enhanement to the aggravted murder charge.
Robinson was also charged with felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, a first-degree felony; two counts of obstruction of justice, a second-degree felony; two counts of tampering with a witness, a third-degree felony; and one count of a violent offense committed in the presence of a child, a class-A misdemeanor.
Authorities believe Robinson shot and killed Kirk from the rooftop of the Losee Center building during Kirk’s “Prove Me Wrong” event at an outdoor courtyard at Utah Valley University in Orem.
A 33-hour manhunt followed, as authorities combed security footage and sent imagery of the alleged suspect to the public.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, police located a bolt-action rifle wrapped in a towel in an area on the northern edge of UVU’s campus and found inscriptions engraved on casings found with the rifle. One casing allegedly read “Hey fascist! CATCH! (up arrow symbol, right arrow symbol, and three down arrow symbols).” A second unfired casing allegedly read “O Bella ciao, Bella ciao, Bella ciao, Ciao, ciao!” and a third unfired casing allegedly read “If you read this, you are GAY Lmao.”
Robinson was turned over to police Friday after a family member reached out to a family friend, who then contacted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office with information that Robinson had confessed or implied involvement in the incident, according to authorities.
