According to a probable cause affidavit, troopers with Utah Highway Patrol were investigating the crash in the northbound lanes of I-15 Wednesday morning involving a semi, driven by Jacob Ortell Scott of Huntington.
Utah Highway Patrol said the initial crash happened around 11:15 involving the semi, which ultimately led to a five-car collision and caused delays on northbound I-15 in Utah County that persisted into the late afternoon.
According to the probable cause affidavit, while law enforcement were investigating the crash, a trooper conducted a search of a refrigerated trailer on the semi and made an unusual discovery
“He observed two sets of eyes in the refrigerated trailer,” police said in the affidavit.
The probable cause statement said the trooper then asked Scott who was to which he “looked surprised” but then told officers that there were kids in the trailer.
Two girls ages, 12 and 14, were allegedly found in the refrigerated trailer, according to the affidavit, which noted that “there was no way for the girls to exit.”
Scott, 28, reportedly told officers that they were traveling from Huntington to Salt Lake City at the time of the crash, police said in the affidavit, who also stated that investigators determined the girls had been in the refrigerated trailer during the more than two-hour trip.
Officers said in the statement that the thermostat inside the trailer was set at 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Though, at one point, the thermostat showed the temperature to be 29.5 degrees Fahrenheit.
Troopers also observed bedding inside the trailer as well, the affidavit said.
Scott was taken to a hospital for a hand injury and later transported booked into the Utah County Jail on suspicion of aggravated child abuse, according to the probable cause statement.
