A motorcyclist has died after a crash with a passenger van on University Avenue in Provo Monday afternoon, police announced in a press release.
Janna-Lee Holland, spokesperson for the Provo Police Department, said the collision happened at around 6:35 p.m., when a passenger van traveling northbound on University Avenue was turning left at the intersection of 1200 South, and collided with a motorcycle heading southbound.
The motorcyclist was taken to Utah Valley Hospital for treatment, but the individual succumbed to their injuries, Holland said in the release.
As officers from the Provo Police Traffic Accident team were on scene responding to that incident, Holland said another crash occurred just several blocks away near 300 S. University Avenue.
In the second crash, a vehicle reportedly struck the center island structure of the roadway, thus causing traffic lane obstructions, according to the release.
“Due to the circumstances, responding officers initiated a DUI investigation,” Holland said in the release.
Police said the driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Due to both incidents happening almost simultaneously — during peak travel times, Holland said officers from the Orem Police Department were dispatched to assist Provo police with response efforts.
Southbound lanes were reduced along University Avenue while officers were on scene, but reopened a short time later.
The fatal collision remains under investigation, police said.
