A ninth grade student has died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound while on a class field trip in Provo Canyon, according to police.

The Utah County Sheriff’s Office said students were at South Fork Park in the canyon Wednesday when the student sustained the injury.

Alpine School District officials confirmed the incident and that the student was from Canyon View Junior High in Orem.

The Utah County Sheriff’s Office said deputies and their medical personnel arrived on scene and the student was flown to a nearby hospital, where they ultimately succumbed to their injuries.

Details about how the incident happened were not disclosed Wednesday, but the Alpine School District said that no other students who were on the field trip were harmed.

Rich Stowell, spokesperson for the Alpine School District, said some students witnessed the incident and the school has several skilled administrators and counselors ready to help students process and recover from the event.

“Counseling resources are available at the school and will be for as long as needed,” he said in a statement. “We will share additional resources with the school community in our communications with them.”

The Utah County Sheriff’s Office said “the tragic incident” is under investigation and is being conducted by Utah County Sheriff Office detectives.

The student’s identity will not be released at this time, the sheriff’s office said.
