Tyler Robinson, 22, the suspect in the shooting death of Charlie Kirk, appears by camera before Judge Tony Graf of the 4th District Court on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2025, for his initial appearance in Provo.

Utah County announced Wednesday the defense attorney appointed to defend the man who is being charged with the murder of Charlie Kirk.

Kathryn Nester of Nester-Lewis, Attorney’s at Law will represent Tyler Robinson, 22, as he faces seven criminal charges, including aggravated murder, after police say he shot and killed Kirk at an event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10.

According to Nester-Lewis’ website, Nester is a trial lawyer who has been trying cases in federal courts for over 30 years, including capital murder charges.

Judge Tony Graf found Robinson indigent and appointed a Rule A qualified attorney to represent him last week.

The Utah County Commission approved Wednesday the addition of two full-time, career service deputy county attorney positions and two full-time career service paralegal positions to provide defense for Robinson.

“Government is charged with maintaining justice and order, and in this chamber, our duty is responsibility to ensure that our laws are carried out fairly, and that includes ensuring both a well-equipped prosecution and a competent defense,” Commissioner Amelia Powers Gardner said.

Commissioner Skyler Beltran said the county approved over $1 million in additional spending for an event “we didn’t want” to provide the defense but said it was important in ensuring a fair trial for each side.

“A life was lost; a family is broken. Our community is just very upset,” Beltran said. “And we’re tasked with upholding the rule of law on both sides.”

Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray filed charges Sept. 16 against Robinson and said he intends to pursue the death penalty.

Starting at $4.32/week.
