The Alpine School District said students from Canyon View Junior High in Orem were on a field trip Wednesday in the canyon when the incident happened.
“We are heartbroken as a school district at the passing of one of our students today, a 9th grader who went to Canyon View Junior High,” the district said in a statement Wednesday evening. “We offer deepest condolences to the student’s family and friends.”
The sheriff’s office did not disclose any further information Thursday regarding the shooting or how the student obtained the weapon.
According to the Alpine School District, other students witnessed the incident, but no one else was harmed.
Classes at Canyon View Junior High resumed as normal on Thursday, but parent-teacher conferences which were scheduled in the evening were canceled, according to district officials.
Resources for students still processing the event will be made available for as long as needed, school district officials said.
“We know that adolescents can grieve, process, and recover better when they have a trusted adult to guide them — we encourage parents to engage in that process, and have provided some resources to them that may help,” a statement from the Alpine District reads.
The Utah County Sheriff’s Office said the incident remains under investigation.
