American Airlines’ commitment to servicing the Provo Airport just went up a notch.

The United States’ largest airline brought mainline service for its Provo to Dallas/Fort Worth route, Provo Airport announced Saturday.

Scheduled for each Monday and Friday going forward, an American A319 will service the route, the airport said. The plane can carry more passengers than the smaller, regional carriers that typically fly the route.

“Mainline service means a larger aircraft with more seats available, extra room onboard, and more flexibility when planning your next trip!” Provo Airport said.

American Airlines arrived in Provo in October 2024 on planes operated by SkyWest. Flights from PVU fly to American Airlines’ hub at DFW multiple times a day and to Phoenix, another hub, once a day, connecting Utah County to the rest of the country and world.

The upgrade in airplane size to service some DFW routes is one of many milestones Provo Airport has taken as it expands into a viable alternative for flying out of Salt Lake City.

This year, Breeze Airways added two routes from PVU, to Burbank and Las Vegas, expanding its Provo footprint to nine routes. Allegiant flies to eight cities out of Provo.

Provo Airport is also currently undergoing a $140 million-plus terminal expansion project to extend the airport to 10 gates, while expanding ticketing and baggage-processing areas.

During construction this month, drop-off lanes adjacent to the terminal are closed 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, according to Provo Airport. On April 23, those lanes will be closed for an additional three weeks.

“Please use the long-term lot in addition to the pick-up lane for all pickups and drop-offs during this six-week construction period,” Provo Airport said.

Starting at $4.32/week.
