The department said in a news release that officers responded to the domestic violence incident involving a weapon at 5 a.m. Sunday. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found that the female suspect had already fled.

Authorities said officers then responded to a known residence of the suspect, identified her and attempted to take her into custody.

“The suspect was armed with a firearm. During the encounter, shots were fired, and the female suspect was pronounced dead at the scene,” police said.

The officer involved was not injured, and a male present at the home was taken into custody, Nephi police said.

The Utah County Multiagency Officer-Involved Critical Incident Team was activated and began a formal investigation into the incident Sunday, according to the news release.

Police said no additional information will be released at this time due to the investigation.
