Expanding the SoCal options: Breeze Airways opens route from Provo to Burbank

Breeze Airways has announced a new route to Burbank from Provo Airport.

The travel options from Utah County to Southern California just became a little more plentiful Thursday, as Breeze Airways flew its first flight from Provo Airport to Hollywood Burbank Airport.

The flight will begin operating four times a week, on Mondays, Thursday, Fridays and Sundays, then switch to daily service on March 15.

Burbank marks the third Southern California destination Breeze flies direct to from Provo, along with John Wayne Airport in Orange County and San Bernadino International Airport. Routes from PVU to John Wayne and Burbank are also serviced by Allegiant Air.

Breeze Chief People Officer Jeff Weber said the flight from Provo to Orange County is one of the airline’s busiest, and that going to Burbank will cater to customers traveling to the northern Los Angeles and Simi Valley region while avoiding the hassle of Los Angeles International Airport.

“A lot more access to family and friends and attractions down there through another airport that’s not LAX,” Weber said. “A lot more convenient and a lot easier to get in and out of.”

Breeze, which launched in 2021 and is headquartered in Salt Lake County, aims to offer affordable flights to underserved airports that provide a more convenient travel experience, according to Weber.

Breeze does not have traditional hubs like some of the larger airlines, but considers Provo one of its operating bases. The airline services nine direct flights from Provo, including a flight to Las Vegas that will resume next month. Weber said the airline is filling its seat capacity on flights out of Provo — which is why it continues to expand its routes.

“We’ve partnered really well with Provo airport,” he said. “They’ve been a great partner for us to talk about expansion plans and how we continue to add destinations.”

Many travelers sitting in the Provo Airport waiting to fly to Burbank Thursday morning did not realize they were on Breeze’s inaugural flight from Provo to Los Angeles County, but were pleased the flight was being serviced.

California resident Olivia Tonga called it “the best news ever” because she lives close to Burbank and her family lives near Provo.

“Provo is so much closer than to where my family is in Utah,  and also the Salt Lake City Airport is just kind of the worst,” Tonga said. “You have to walk all the way to the B gates every time. So I love this airport.”

Jay Pevey, of Layton, said he booked the flight Wednesday because it was more affordable than flying out of Salt Lake.

“Competition’s great, right?” he said. “And so if it can get the prices down and make things easier to do, then we’ll look into it.”

Starting at $4.32/week.
