A man was killed in a snowmobiling accident Friday in the Iron Mine Mountain area of Wasatch County near Woodland, marking the latest fatal accident in Utah’s backcountry last week.

The Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office received a report of the accident around 11:45 a.m., and search and rescue personnel, medical responders and law enforcement responded to the scene, according to a news release.

The sheriff’s office said a preliminary investigation indicated the man crashed and became trapped beneath his snowmobile for an unknown amount of time. Individuals in the man’s riding group found him and performed CPR, but he died at the scene, authorities said.

“The Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office offers its sincere condolences to the family and loved ones affected,” the news release said. “The identity of the deceased is not being released at this time.”

The accident occurred just two days after a man was killed by an avalanche in the Snake Creek area near Midway.

An 11-year-old was also killed by an avalanche Thursday while skiing in the backcountry near Brighton Ski Resort. The incident prompted a warning from Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera.

“This winter has created layers within the snowpack that can be unpredictable,” Rivera said in a news release. “We want people to enjoy the Cottonwood Canyons, but safety must come first. When conditions are unstable, the smartest decision may be to avoid backcountry recreation altogether.”

The avalanche danger in the Provo-area mountains was considerable, according to a Sunday report from the Utah Avalanche Center, which warned people to stay away from slopes steeper than 30 degrees.

Starting at $4.32/week.
