Spanish Fork Police BadgePolice exchanged fire with a suspect at a Spanish Fork residence after responding to a domestic violence call Saturday before placing him into custody, according to reports.
The incident, which occurred just after noon, prompted a temporary shelter-in-place order in a Spanish Fork neighborhood.
According to a news release, Spanish Fork police were dispatched to the area of 831 S. 1520 East after a woman reported she fled her home after her husband, who had been drinking, hurt her during a physical altercation.
“It was also reported the male had held the female down and had been holding a knife to her earlier,” the news release said. “The male was reported to be throwing items out of a window and had several weapons inside the home.”
Upon arrival, police said the man was seen holding a rifle out of a window and that officers heard shots fired inside the home.
The Utah County Metro SWAT team, along with other assisting agencies, responded to the scene. The SWAT team used a BearCat vehicle to approach the home and attempt to negotiate, according to the news release.
The man reportedly fired shots at the BearCat, and several officers returned fire. Police said the SWAT team reattempted negotiations with the suspect, and he eventually exited his home and was taken into custody.
He was transported to a hospital for evaluation of minor injuries and was to be booked into the Utah County Jail on several felony charges, according to police.
Spanish Fork police Lt. Cory Slaymaker confirmed to the Daily Herald that no officers were injured in the incident and said the shelter-in-place order was based “on a totality of information” officers learned en route to the call and what they observed upon arrival.
“It wasn’t after he fired a shot or anything,” Slaymaker said. “It was placed well before that, based on the information that we received.”
