Springville Junior High was temporarily placed on lockdown Tuesday morning while police dealt with an alleged domestic violence incident nearby.

According to a Springville police news release, officers responded at 10:05 a.m. to a man holding a handgun to his head on a neighborhood sidewalk at 1500 E. and Center Street, a block from the school, prompting the school resource officer to immediately initiate safety protocols to lock the school down.

The man was given commands to drop the weapon, to which police said he complied, and the lockdown was lifted once there was no longer a threat.

Springville police reported that an investigation determined the man had allegedly threatened to harm himself after his adult girlfriend broke up with him, and that the man had been following the woman the last multiple days and harassing her.

“The victim reported that the male had shown up at her place of work today, and advised that he would harm himself if he couldn’t be with the female,” the news release said.

The man was arrested and booked in the Utah County Jail for Felony 3 domestic violence stalking.

Starting at $4.32/week.
