The Iron Fire started in Juab County Friday, prompting evacuations to the town of Eureka Saturday night and growing to 21,935 acres across Juab, Utah and Tooele counties by Sunday afternoon.

Authorities said no primary structures were lost overnight thanks to a successful backburn operation on the town’s north side, but Eureka remained under an evacuation order as of the Daily Herald’s print deadline Sunday. Firefighters worked to secure and strengthen the fire perimeter around the town, according to Utah Fire Info.

“Thank you to our federal, state, and local responders, Juab County Emergency Management, the Red Cross, law enforcement, and all those supporting this effort,” Utah Fire Info said.

The fire was scheduled to be turned over from the Type 4 incident management team to the complex incident management team at 6 p.m. Sunday. It remained 0% contained.

“As the complexity has increased, we will likely be looking at a multiday event,” said Utah Forestry Fire and State Lands spokeswoman Kelly Wickens. “(The complex incident management team) is a larger organization, with more resources. They have all sorts of planning, operations and logistics people already in place, so once they hit the ground here, they’ll be ready to go quickly.”

The human-caused fire started at 10:45 p.m. Friday on private land and spread into Bureau of Land Management land overnight, according to Wickens. The blaze grew rapidly Saturday due to high winds, casting smoke and ash into Utah Valley. Flames could be seen from the hillside in Provo Saturday night.

Around 6 p.m. Saturday, Eureka residents were placed on READY status and were told to have a go-bag and be ready to leave. At 6:15 p.m. Saturday, the fire reached two miles from Eureka, prompting the evacuation of ranches north of the city.

An evacuation order was issued around 8:30 p.m. Saturday when the fire reached a trigger point near the town, authorities said. An evacuation center was established at a Latter-day Saints chapel in Elberta, and U.S. 6 was closed at Elberta.

Wickens said firefighters are seeing fires grow larger than typical for this time of year, due to drought and low snowpack. She said they’re hoping summer monsoons will bring moisture.
