Evacuation orders remain in effect for Eureka as the Iron Fire grew to more than 24,284 acres Monday, but fire officials are optimistic about the town’s safety moving forward.

“Everything is looking really good in Eureka,” Great Basin Complex Incident Management Team 3 Operations Section Chief Brad Mihelic said at a Santaquin public meeting Monday evening.

The fire reached dangerously close to Eureka Saturday night, prompting a full-scale evacuation and the closure of U.S. 6. Mihelic said local agencies and volunteers managed to hold off the blaze with minimal property loss.

The Complex Incident Management Team, which took over control of the wildfire at 6 a.m. Monday, will continue securing the fire line around Eureka structures before lifting the evacuation order, Mihelic said.

Much of the fire’s growth Monday came southeast as the fire neared the town of Elberta, according to Mihelic. Crews are placing indirect fire lines around the perimeter on the east and west sides to slow the blaze.

“Overall, it’s looking pretty good,” he said. “I know it doesn’t look good out there, but we’re pretty confident in our plan.”

As crews work to slow the Iron Fire, which reached 3% containment Monday, a new wildfire west of Utah Lake Monday night.

Utah Fire Info announced around 10 p.m. the start of the Dutchman Fire south of Saratoga Springs, below the communications towers.

The fire is estimated 80 acres, and nothing is currently threatened. Authorities said the blaze is high and inaccessible to engines, and multiple ground resources are responding.
