A map of upcoming construction at 1600 North in Orem is shown.

Construction is set to begin on the 1600 North widening project in Orem next week, and the Utah Department of Transportation is asking drivers to plan ahead.

Starting as early as March 25, the project will add two lanes of traffic in each direction on 1600 North between 1200 West and State Street. A center turn lane, a shared-use path, sidewalks, bike lanes and a park strip will also be added, and intersection improvements will be made.

Drivers should expect lane shifts and construction vehicles in the area, and pedestrians should follow posted detours around closed sidewalks and avoid work zones, UDOT said.

Construction will take place on the south side of the road through fall, and the entire project is estimated to be completed in 2027.

The objective of the project, according to UDOT’s environmental study, is to reduce travel time and queue length during peak afternoon and evening hours and provide a strong east-west connection to the freeway and the Lindon and Orem communities.

“We look at this as a great way to improve the route between (Interstate 15) and State Street in north Orem and south Lindon,” UDOT Region 3 spokesman Wyatt Woolley previously told the Daily Herald. “And so 1600 North will become our road, and we’re going to widen it, mostly to the south of the road as it winds its way between 1200 West and State Street. And it will greatly improve the capacity of that route.”

Widening the road required right-of-way acquisition and the demolition of properties, a process that UDOT said was completed this year.

Starting at $4.32/week.
