A horseback rider found the remains Saturday and call 911 Saturday night after reaching cell service, the Utah County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Sheriff’s deputies interviewed the witness Saturday night, and on Sunday morning authorities hiked to the area and located the remains.

“At this time, we have confirmed they are human remains and we are still investigating and processing the scene. We are also still working on confirming the identity of the deceased,” the news release said.

Upon the search’s completion, the human remains will be transported to the State Medical Examiner’s office, according to the sheriff’s office.

The findings come 18 months after the sheriff’s office located human remains in Springville Rock Canyon.
