Mike KennedyMike Kennedy is a Republican Party candidate for the 4th Congressional District. Below are his responses to a six-question survey sent to him by the Daily Herald. This interview may have been edited for brevity and clarity. The Daily Herald sent the questionnaire to Jonny Larsen and Taylor Wright but did not receive a response by deadline.
1. Why is the position you are running for important?
Serving in Congress carries a serious responsibility to protect our constitutional freedoms, safeguard our nation, and preserve opportunity for the next generation. The decisions we make affect whether families can afford a home, whether businesses can grow, and whether our children inherit a stronger country or a greater burden of debt.
For Utah, where roughly two-thirds of our land is federally managed, those responsibilities also reach into our water, energy, roads, and public lands. Utah’s 4th District needs a representative who understands those challenges, respects the people he serves, and does the work to deliver results. My purpose is to make Washington smaller and Utah stronger.
2. What unique qualities, attributes, skills and experiences do you possess that make you the best candidate in this race?
For more than 25 years, I cared for Utah families as a family doctor. Medicine taught me to listen carefully, speak honestly, and tackle serious problems one step at a time to deliver results. Those lessons guide my service in Congress.
I also became an attorney, helped build and run a small business, and served in Utah’s part-time Legislature, where we balanced budgets and delivered tax relief. That experience helps me understand both the consequences of public policy and the work required to pass meaningful legislation.
Katrina and I have been married for more than thirty years, with eight children and twelve grandchildren. Our family has deepened my commitment to preserving the freedoms and opportunities that have blessed our lives. I want every Utah family to have the opportunity to build a future here.
3. Please explain your priorities if elected, as well as why you believe you are uniquely capable of achieving those priorities.
My priorities are upholding the constitution, lowering costs, restoring fiscal discipline, keeping our border secure, strengthening American energy, holding Washington accountable, and solving problems. Families deserve to keep more of what they earn and have confidence that their government is spending responsibly.
In my first term, eight pieces of legislation I introduced have passed the House with bipartisan support. Among them is my License to Drill Act, recently signed into law by President Trump, which supports timely processing of energy permits so American production is not held back by unnecessary delays. My wildfire research legislation also passed the House to help protect our communities, watersheds, and public lands.
I have helped lead legislation to ban congressional insider trading and sponsored term limits legislation. My office has also resolved over 1,000 constituent cases and returned nearly $8 million to Utahns. Effective representation requires both advancing sound policy and helping people resolve the problems they face. I have made both a priority.
4. Please describe how you view the importance of compromise in politics and provide an example from your own experiences that highlights your perspective.
Our system of government requires people with different convictions to work together. That takes patience, respect, and the ability to recognize common ground without surrendering principle. I learned in Utah’s legislature that listening carefully to differing viewpoints can strengthen legislation and build the support needed to pass it.
In Congress, I worked across the aisle to pass eight pieces of legislation I introduced through the House. That includes the U.S. Research Protection Act, which closes a loophole foreign adversaries could exploit to gain access to American research. We found common ground in our commitment to protecting American innovation and national security.
I will work with anyone to advance a sound policy that serves Utah. Disagreement should be addressed honestly, but it should not prevent us from fulfilling the responsibilities voters entrusted to us.
5. How will you balance the views of the vocal public, your political party, and your own understanding and knowledge as an elected representative?
As a doctor, I learned that listening carefully is essential to making good decisions. Patients deserve to have their concerns taken seriously, and so do the people I represent. That includes those who speak up at public meetings and families whose work and responsibilities keep them from attending.
I share my party’s principles, but my oath is to the Constitution and my responsibility is to the people I serve. I weigh their concerns alongside the facts and my own experience, and I will always give them an honest explanation of my decisions. Where there is a proper federal role, I will act. Where decisions belong to Utah, our local communities, and the people, I will defend their authority to make them.
