Bob Hope once said, “My idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?”
One of my favorite things about living in Provo is getting to see the spirit of generosity in our community. Over the last 15 years that I have worked in homeless services, I have seen the care that we take of our neighbors — both sheltered and unsheltered. I love how many offices and workplaces include acts of giving and service in their holiday parties, and the myriad of unsung acts of generosity that individuals, families, religious groups, and more undertake to lift the burdens of those around them. I am humbled by the number of people who reach out to me, asking how we can help those experiencing homelessness in our community.
Now that the holidays have ended, it can be more difficult to stay mindful of how even the smallest acts of giving can make a huge difference. As we carry forth our holiday spirit into the new year and make resolutions for ourselves, may I suggest some simple but vital acts of service and giving that we can continue throughout the year.
Throughout Utah County, there are many service agencies that can do so much with so little. A small time commitment to volunteer your talents and energy can make a huge difference. There are so many volunteer opportunities in our community that will offer the chance to support causes that are close to our hearts. You can easily search for volunteer opportunities that match your passions by looking through the database at United Way of Utah County, or by doing a simple google search.
If you don’t have enough time to volunteer, there are many ways that you can make a difference with a one-time donation of in-kind items. Many organizations serving in Utah County keep a current list of urgent needs on their website that help them in their agency missions. Here are some of the current, urgently needed items in our community at a few agencies, with links to additional needs:
