Mayors of Utah Valley: Lehi City finding solutions to traffic congestion

The Point of the Mountain Connector between Interstate-15 and Mountain View Corridor.

Utah County growth is not showing signs of slowing down and Lehi City has been paying attention. In the last 10 years, our city has grown over 60% and has welcomed the tech community. We have watched the heart of Silicon Slopes expand, bringing new jobs and opportunities. Companies such as Adobe, Texas Instruments and Xactware have made Lehi their home, and others are following their lead. As much as we are excited for the economic growth it comes with growing pains.

Since I came into office in 2018, I have been acutely aware of the growth in Utah County. The entire county has exceeded the forecasted rate and has been working to catch up. Our top issue is finding solutions to handle the increase in traffic. We need to develop solutions that not only affect Lehi City, but our neighboring cities and the drivers that use I-15 to commute.

We are currently working on the Point of the Mountain Connector plan. The need for a connector was identified by the Point of the Mountain Commission in 2018. It has taken a long time to get to where we are today and I’m excited about this plan. The connector will be a freeway connection between I-15 and Mountain View Corridor. It will be two lanes in each direction with bridges overs the Jordan River and Redwood Road. Right now, there are no other direct connections between the two freeways.

The Connector addresses a significant travel pattern between north I-15 in Salt Lake County and south Mountain View Corridor in Utah County. This pattern is projected to increase as populations grow in the western part of the county. The plan is in progress, and with the help of top engineers, neighboring cities and state officials, we can come up with something that will benefit everybody.

The Point Mountain Connector will also relieve roadways that are projected to be overcapacity — including Porter Rockwell Blvd, Triumph Blvd. and Clubhouse Drive. This connector will improve certain aspects of the 2100 North freeway. While we are working on the plan, we are actively working on road improvements. We have 60% design completed of widening 2300 West to five lanes from Main Street to 2100 North. We are reviewing similar improvements to the intersection of 3600 West 2100 North.

Alternatives to the Point of the Mountain Connector between Interstate-15 and Mountain View Corridor.

In the last five years, Lehi City has completed projects that have improved the commute within the city. We recently completed widening Main Street from 2300 West to Redwood Road to five lanes, two lanes in each direction and a two-way left turn lane. We have also added travel lanes and traffic controls on 1200 East just south of 3200 North.

The Connector is an important component to the Point of the Mountain. It will improve the way everyone travels through Lehi City and north Utah County, cutting down the commute time and enhancing the safety of our drivers.
