The Pillar of the Valley award gala is an annual event hosted by the Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce. It honors individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to various aspects of Utah Valley such as the business, civic, social, educational and cultural spheres. It serves as a premier social occasion, drawing hundreds of influential leaders from different fields in Utah.

The honorees’ stories inspire others to become pillars of influence in their own communities. The theme of this year’s event was “Service Before Self,” which aptly reflects the devotion and sacrifice exhibited by the two individuals honored at the event: Dr. Richard P. Nielsen and the late Gail Halvorsen.

Dr. Richard P. Nielsen’s impact has been global, reaching from the snow-capped peaks of Kilimanjaro to the White House. His visionary leadership transformed a healthcare education startup, founded in 1998, into the esteemed Rocky Mountain University (RMU), which offers a wide array of programs. This expansion has positively impacted countless employees and graduates and millions of patients, leaving an indelible mark on the healthcare sector.

Dr. Nielsen’s retirement after 27 years as president/CEO of RMU left behind a legacy of transformative leadership and innovation. He now dedicates his efforts to improving healthcare in Africa.

Gail Halvorsen’s story of his activities during the Berlin Airlift in 1948 stands as a testament to the power of compassion and selflessness. Sharing two sticks of gum with children at an airport fence sparked his determination to provide candy to the children during daily flights, earning him the endearing nickname “Uncle Wiggly Wings.”

His initiative “Operation Little Vittles” garnered international attention and boosted the morale of Berliners during the Soviet Union blockade. More than 23 tons of candy were dropped and delivered to the children, significantly shaping the post-WWII trajectory in Europe.

This year’s Pillar of the Valley event itself was filled with awe-inspiring moments. Attendees were treated to a “Pop-Up Museum” displaying artifacts from Col. Halvorsen’s private collection and Dr. Nielsen’s personal articles from his world travels and philanthropic efforts, which was curated and supported by the Heritage Museum of Lehi. The evening’s entertainment included captivating performances by the N’goma Y’ Africa Cultural Center African Dancers, enchanting musical numbers by Miss Provo and Miss Orem, and an exhilarating set by the Jim Huish Band.

Kate Bowcut, the chair of the planning committee, beautifully captured the enduring impact of the event. She eloquently emphasized the significance of Gail’s humble act of sharing gum, showcasing the remarkable influence that even the smallest gestures can have. The Utah Valley Chamber’s ultimate aspiration was for every attendee to depart from the gathering with a renewed sense of inspiration and a heightened commitment to enhancing the community.

The Pillar event not only serves as a platform to honor those who have already made significant contributions but also as a powerful call to action, encouraging individuals to reflect on how they can actively contribute to the betterment of Utah Valley.

The Pillar of the Valley award gala has become a cherished annual tradition, attracting influential leaders and inspiring positive change in Utah Valley since 2011. As the chamber looks ahead to Pillar 2024, slated for April 10, excitement is building for another remarkable evening of celebration and inspiration. While the honorees are yet to be announced, the anticipation for the upcoming event is evident.
