Summer is wonderful for so many reasons; it’s difficult to name them all. One of them is the plethora of arts goings-on for all ages to enjoy. Many of these are outdoors, so summer is the perfect time. We know that participating in, viewing and enjoying the arts is good for the soul, so we should all get out there and enjoy some of the local arts this summer.
Concerts in the Park
Many communities in Utah Valley hold concerts in the park during the summer. Local bands perform while audience members sit under the stars and enjoy the fresh air. Pleasant Grove’s concert series is held on Sunday evenings at 7:30 p.m. in the Downtown Park, 100 S. Main.
American Fork’s Concerts in the Park run through the end of July on Monday evenings at 7 p.m. at the American Fork Amphitheater, 851 E. 700 North. Springville’s Summer Concert Series features local entertainment as well. These are held on some Saturdays throughout the summer at Spring Acres Arts Park, 700 S. 1300 East, at 7 p.m.
In addition to these three examples, other communities hold concerts in the park as well. Check out your community’s website or social media pages to find out more.
Murals
Murals are being created in many communities, much to the delight of residents and visitors. Downtown Provo is becoming a feast for the eyes with the many murals that have popped up there in recent years.

The newest mural was recently completed in the underground hallway at 65 N. University Ave. by artist Christianna Osborn. A self-guided walking tour of the many downtown murals could be a great summertime activity for the whole family. For a list and map of the many city’s murals, go to http://downtownprovo.com.
Don’t forget to walk by Pleasant Grove’s Strawberry Days mural, located at approximately 40 South Main Street. This mural began as a community project and is now a permanent fixture in the historic downtown area of the city.
Arts Experiences
Pleasant Grove’s US and ART (Unicorn Sprinkles and ART) is hosting several arts experiences this summer. Chocolate paint nights are held every fourth Saturday. Day camps are every Monday during the summer and all members of the family are welcome. For children ages 8-12, three businesses in Pleasant Grove are working together for a Harry Potter party on July 26 and July 28, where participants will create a potion, a wand and even eat a chocolate frog. For more information, check out http://USandART.com.
This summer, Art in the Park experiences will be held on July 20 at Provo’s Bicentennial Park and Aug. 10 at Paul Ream Park, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The Neighborhood Art Center and Provo City are working together to bring these free events to the community. Everyone is welcome to go to create some art. All ages are welcome and clothes that can get messy are encouraged. For more information, go to http://neighborhoodartcenter.org.
Would you rather do your own thing? Many local arts enthusiasts take their cameras or sketchbooks out when hiking the beautiful trails surrounding Utah Valley. What a great way to integrate exercise, nature and creativity. Happy Art-Filled Summer!
