American Fork City, like many communities in Utah, faced the imminent threat of flooding due to excessive snow melt this year. With a major river running through our town, we recognized the potential disastrous consequences for our residents and businesses. That’s why we are immensely grateful for the hard work and dedication of our flood prevention team, who tirelessly kept our community safe and our river secure.

Comprised primarily of our Sewer and Storm Drain department and the American Fork Irrigation Company employees, with support from other public works and public safety departments, our flood prevention team went above and beyond to mitigate the flood risks.

Their efforts began as early as February, when they began meticulously clearing the river channel of loose debris, branches and dead trees. They diligently repaired and stabilized eroding walls, and removed obstacles such as couches, mattresses and other garbage that had been deposited in the river. These proactive measures significantly reduced the potential for blockages and enhanced the flow capacity of the river.

Once the river channel was cleared and strengthened, our team identified areas of concern and strategically staged supplies at those locations, ensuring a swift response if necessary. They proactively secured additional resources and equipment, leaving no stone unturned in their commitment to protecting our entire city. Working in collaboration with local community volunteer groups, we were able to get over 5,000 sandbags filled.

With proactive prevention measures in place, our flood team began the tedious responsibility of monitoring the river around the clock. They meticulously cleared debris and logs from the debris basin and weir as they came down from the canyon. They diligently cleaned out grates to prevent blockages and overflows.

Constant surveillance was maintained via cameras and regular inspections throughout the night. The dedicated individuals on-call exhibited unwavering commitment, often sacrificing sleep, with only a few hours of rest at a time. Their dedication ensured that our city streets remained open when other cities were forced to close their roads.

Thanks to the exceptional skills and foresight of our team, American Fork City stood prepared to face any challenge that Mother Nature threw our way. Their meticulous planning, swift reactions, and tireless efforts epitomize the commitment we have to our community’s safety and well-being.

As the floodwaters recede and our city recovers from this ordeal, I extend my deepest appreciation and gratitude to every member of our flood prevention team. Their unwavering dedication, sacrifice and professionalism have been instrumental in safeguarding our community during this trying time.

I would also like to express my gratitude to our residents for their cooperation and resilience throughout this challenging period. Your vigilance, adherence to directives, and support have played a vital role in our collective success.

Moving forward, as we reflect on this experience, American Fork City remains committed to further strengthening our flood prevention measures. We will continue to invest in our infrastructure, improve coordination between departments and collaborate with our community partners to enhance our ability to mitigate and respond to future flood risks effectively.
