Kids may be back in school and backpacks may have replaced swimming suits, but there is still time to enjoy the summer season, which doesn’t officially end until the autumnal equinox on Sept. 22. After all, the weather — when we aren’t experiencing heavy rains and hailstorms — is still warm, sunny and bright.
Farmers markets
Many local communities hold farmers markets during the summer months and these often continue into the first few weeks of fall. These can be a fun way to get outside, take a walk, and purchase fresh produce and other items from local gardeners and artisans. Weekly farmers markets are regularly held in Provo, Orem, Lindon, Saratoga Springs and other cities.
Walking tour
The Pleasant Grove Historic Preservation Commission’s last walking tour of the season will be held at 7 p.m. Monday. This tour will begin at the Old Town Hall, 105 S. 100 East. The group will walk and learn about historic homes in the area and complete the tour back at the Old Town Hall. The evening ends with light refreshments. The tour is free, but an optional tour booklet can be purchased for $5.
Arts stroll
The Provo Art Stroll is a self-guided art tour that takes place on the first Friday of every month in downtown Provo. Over a dozen businesses host local artists and entertainment for the public to enjoy. Free concerts, live painting and more than a dozen art exhibits make for a great night out. The stroll takes place from 6-9 p.m. Maps will be available at participating locations in downtown Provo on the evenings of the strolls.
Murdock Canal Trail
Isn’t it always a good time to walk, run or ride on the trail? The Murdock Canal Trail winds through some beautiful scenery and summer is the perfect time to experience it. Actually, people use the trail year-round, but the bright sunshine of summer makes it especially enjoyable.
Fresh produce roundup
How many times do fresh zucchini get passed around from person to person? During these last few weeks of summer, when there is so much fresh produce in gardens and on trees, why not round some up to donate to those in need?
Fresh fruits and veggies aren’t commonly donated to food banks and pantries. These can be a luxury to someone who has a difficult time putting food on the table. Collecting extras from the neighborhood and donating them to help local needy families is a great way to celebrate summer.
