February has been proclaimed Choose Kindness Month in Pleasant Grove. Residents — and others — are being encouraged to engage in acts of kindness every day throughout the month. We all want to be in the habit of spreading kindness, right? Making a conscious effort to do daily kind deeds this month is a great start.
The fact is that kindness has been found to improve our mood as well as reduce stress and anxiety. So, spreading kindness is good for everyone — the giver and the receiver.
Every February since 2018, this month has been designated for kindness in Pleasant Grove, with people encouraged to go out of their way to brighten the days of others. However, we don’t have to live in Pleasant Grove to participate and get some great ideas for acts of kindness.
“We encourage our citizens to understand the positive impact that choosing to be kind to others can have on our mental health. Being kind to other people can make you feel good, reduce stress and be beneficial for our emotional well-being,” states a proclamation signed by Pleasant Grove Mayor Guy Fugal that designates February as Choose Kindness Month.
Choose Kindness PG is a nonprofit organization that promotes a culture of kindness in the community. The organization works hand in hand with local businesses, all of the schools in Pleasant Grove and the city council to spread kindness.

On the Choose Kindness PG Facebook page, there is a calendar with a kindness idea listed for every day during the month of February. Take time to appreciate the sunrise or sunset. Send a picture of it to a friend and express gratitude. Invite someone new to eat lunch with you today. Enlarge your circle and be inclusive. Call your grandparents and tell them you love them. Read a book to a child.
In conjunction with Choose Kindness Month, service projects have already begun in local schools. On Feb. 22, there will be a community service project at 10 a.m. in the recreation center, 547 S. Locust Ave. Community members are invited to help make comfort kits for children in local hospitals. Supplies are being gathered all month in every school in the city.
On Feb. 26, there will be a “Creating a Community of Kindness” event from 6-8 p.m. at Pleasant Grove High School, 700 E. 200 South. Entertainer Kirby Heyborne will be at the event as well as resource booths and a humanitarian service project, which will include making blankets for victims of the recent Los Angeles fires. The public is invited to attend.
