University students can use goals as a tool to navigate their academic journey while tracking progress and maintaining focus.

As 2025 continues to unfold, many Utah Valley University students are looking to be more effective by setting meaningful resolutions. With goals ranging from improving mental health and physical fitness to achieving academic and career milestones, UVU students are determined to make the most of the year ahead.

A recent Time magazine article stated that only about 8% of people manage to stick with their resolutions for the entire year. However, the UVU students interviewed for this article seem to be focused on creating resolutions that are sustainable and impactful. They are trying to build a sense of purpose and direction that will guide them through 2025.

UVU advisors teach that goal setting will greatly increase student success. According to the Harvard Business Review, setting clear, well-defined goals not only contributes to personal growth but also enhances motivation, helping individuals stay on track and accomplish their objectives. This is particularly true for students, who can use goals as a tool to navigate their academic journey while tracking progress and maintaining focus.

Keila Herrmann, a senior at UVU, is one of many students who sees the value of goal setting. “I set resolutions every January to prioritize my mental health and academic progress,” Herrmann said. “This year, I’m focusing on waking up early and committing to reading at least one book every month. It’s all about setting habits that can improve my overall well-being and help me succeed academically.”

In addition to academic and wellness goals, many UVU students use the new year as a time to explore personal passions and hobbies. Daisy Nielson said, “My new year’s resolution is to focus more on my hobbies, like video blogging and content creation. It’s something I want to commit to throughout the entire year. Having this creative outlet helps me stay balanced and motivated.”

Here are a few proven strategies to help keep new year’s resolutions on track:

1. Set small, achievable goals: According to CBS News, one of the most effective ways to keep resolutions is to break them down into manageable steps. “Shrink down the goal or behavior until you want to do it,” behavioral experts advise.

2. Write it down: Writing down resolutions provides a tangible reminder and reinforces the commitment. Having a physical record can help maintain focus, especially when life gets busy.

3. Track your progress: Keeping track of progress can motivate individuals to stay on course. Celebrating small milestones along the way provides positive reinforcement.

4. Stay positive: It’s important to enjoy the process of achieving goals, knowing that persistence pays off. Maintaining a positive mindset can make challenges feel more manageable.

5. Seek support: Joining student organizations or study groups can provide additional motivation. Peer accountability is a proven strategy for sticking with long-term commitments.

Jake Allen, a UVU senior, explained how he stays on track with his resolutions. “I write my goals down in my phone’s notes app and use a planner to keep me organized. It’s a good reminder that, with effort, I can accomplish just about anything,” he said.

Brandon Christensen, also a senior, shared his resolution for the year. “This year, I’m committed to speaking my mind more often and making deeper connections with people, especially as I finish my final semester at UVU,” he said. “It’s a challenge, but I’m excited about the growth it will bring.”

Goal setting at UVU extends beyond students. Faculty, staff and community members are also encouraged to set goals, fostering a culture of growth and collaboration. This collective focus on development creates an environment where success is not only celebrated but also supported at every level.
