Recently, the coalition reached a remarkable milestone, serving its 3 millionth meal – a testament to its unwavering commitment to providing nourishment to those in need. However, its impact extends far beyond meals.
Through a holistic and collaborative approach, the coalition offers comprehensive onsite services that address both immediate needs and long-term well-being. From hygiene products and laundry facilities to medical, dental and mental health care as well as nutritious meals, educational support, housing and an onsite hydroponic greenhouse, the coalition is changing lives and fostering self-sufficiency.
Nutritious meals
Balanced, nutritious meals are served seven days a week, with more than 105,000 meals provided in 2024. This is made possible by 450 unique generous donors, including caterers, businesses, bakeries, grocery stores, private individuals and community gardens. Additionally, 7,000 unique volunteers — ranging from students and service missionaries to families, churches and businesses — help serve meals, creating a sense of community and stability for those in need.
To further enhance meal quality, the coalition operates an onsite hydroponic greenhouse, producing fresh, nutrient-rich greens year-round. This innovative approach supports sustainability and also provides service opportunities for our clients.
Hygiene products and facilities
The coalition recognizes that personal hygiene is essential for maintaining dignity and self-respect. Individuals experiencing homelessness have access to shower and laundry facilities as well as hygiene products — critical resources that help maintain cleanliness, health and confidence as they seek employment and housing.
Each year, the coalition distributes more than $100,000 worth of these essential items, including sleeping bags, shoes, coats, socks and gloves. Additionally, clothing vouchers for Deseret Industries are available for those in need.
Medical, dental, and mental health services
Access to healthcare is a cornerstone of the coalition’s mission. Many individuals experiencing homelessness or poverty struggle with untreated medical, dental and mental health issues, creating significant barriers to stability.
To address these challenges, the coalition partners with Mountainlands Community Health Center to provide medical and dental services and Wasatch Behavioral Health to offer mental health care services.
Educational support
Through a partnership with My Story Matters, the coalition provides educational programs designed to build resilience and confidence. These programs equip clients with the tools and knowledge needed to create lasting, positive change in their lives.
Transitional housing
Stable housing is a crucial step toward self-sufficiency. The coalition provides transitional housing, allowing clients to focus on employment, education and personal development before securing permanent accommodations. There are 26 units for men and 12 units for women.
Candlelight Villas: A permanent housing solution
A major milestone in the coalition’s efforts is Candlelight Villas, a permanent supportive housing complex. Opened in June 2022, this 72-unit complex provides fully furnished, one-bedroom apartments, offering residents a safe and independent living space.
Designed around a pocket neighborhood concept, Candlelight Villas fosters a strong sense of community through shared outdoor spaces, including patios, barbecue areas and green spaces, encouraging social interaction and mutual support.
A path to self-sufficiency
The Food and Care Coalition’s holistic approach has led to countless success stories. By providing basic necessities, health care, mental health support, housing, educational resources and sustainable food production, the coalition empowers individuals to rebuild their lives with dignity and independence.
Remarkably, all of this is accomplished with just eight full-time and 20 part-time employees, demonstrating the power of dedication, collaboration and compassion.
Community engagement and volunteerism
The coalition relies on the generosity of the community to sustain and expand its services. Financial contributions and volunteer efforts make these programs possible. By engaging local residents, businesses and organizations, the coalition fosters a shared responsibility in supporting those in need — making a direct impact on the lives of individuals facing poverty and homelessness.
