The crowd cheers as The Backseat Lovers perform during the final show of the final season for the Provo Rooftop Concert Series held Friday, Sept. 6, 2019, in downtown Provo. After a seven-year break, Provo Mayor Marsha Judkins announced that the Rooftop Concert Series will return to Provo this summer.
Speaking in a social media video Tuesday, Judkins said she has been working with people who delivered the event the first time and that Nu Skin agreed to host it again on its property.
“We’ve been getting corporate sponsors and figuring everything out,” she said.
Date and times of the event have not been announced. Judkins told the Daily Herald that there are a few details to still be sorted out, and that a formal announcement is forthcoming.
The Rooftop Concert Series originally ran from 2010 to 2019, attracting thousands of people to downtown Provo for multiple free summer concerts annually.
It started on a Provo parking garage rooftop but moved to the Nu Skin plaza in 2014 with sections of Center Street and 100 West closed off to accommodate a larger crowd. Well-known local bands like Neon Trees and the National Parks were among the headline performers.
The event ended in 2019 after organizers said the funding module of relying solely on corporate sponsorships was not sustainable.
At the time, the Daily Herald reported that city officials felt the concert offered the downtown area some much-needed exposure, but store owners had mixed reviews, with some saying it boosted sales and others saying traffic closures during the event hurt business.
During her mayoral campaign last fall, Judkins said she was in favor of bringing the event back as a way to bring the city together more.
“It also could be used to create downtown as a destination, right? I loved the concert series. It brought people from all over, and we all were just having a good time,” Judkins told the Daily Herald in October.
