Food & Care Coalition: The side of homelessness we don’t see

Candlelight Villas, a permanent housing development built and operated by the Food & Care Coalition, provides housing for individuals who have experienced homelessness.

When most people think of homelessness, they picture someone holding a sign on a street corner or sleeping on a park bench. While those situations certainly exist, they represent only a small part of a much larger and more complex reality. Much of homelessness is hidden.

Many people experiencing housing instability are not standing on street corners asking for money. Instead, they spend their days looking for work, meeting with case managers, attending counseling, furthering their education, searching for affordable housing, going to medical and dental appointments, or simply trying to navigate another difficult day. Many are working hard to rebuild their lives, one step at a time.

Others are doing everything they can to avoid becoming homeless. They may be sleeping in a car, staying at a campground, moving from one friend’s couch to another, or living in overcrowded housing with relatives. Some are employed but earn too little to keep up with rising housing costs. Others are just one unexpected expense — a medical emergency, car repair or job loss — away from losing the roof over their heads.

In Utah County, the cost of housing continues to create challenges for many. Rising home prices and rental rates have placed stable housing beyond the reach of too many people. Even those with steady employment struggle to save enough for security deposits, application fees and the first month’s rent while also paying for food, transportation and other necessities. For many, it isn’t a lack of effort that keeps them from moving forward — it is the growing gap between wages and the cost of living.

At the Food & Care Coalition, we see the hidden side of homelessness every day. Behind every person who walks through our doors is a unique story. Some are recovering from illness. Others are escaping domestic violence, overcoming addiction, coping with the loss of a job or trying to rebuild after a series of setbacks. They are veterans, parents, young adults, seniors and neighbors who simply need an opportunity to regain their footing.

Our goal is not only to meet immediate needs with nutritious meals and other essential services but also to help people move toward long-term stability. Through case management, medical and dental care, licensed mental health counseling, employment and educational resources, and on-site transitional and permanent housing, we walk alongside each patron as they build a brighter future. Today, our campus includes 38 transitional housing units and 72 furnished one-bedroom apartments that provide far more than a place to stay — they provide a foundation for rebuilding lives.

The next time you think about homelessness, remember that the greatest struggles are often the ones we never notice — people quietly doing everything they can to regain stability and hope.

You can be part of that hope. Your donations and volunteer service help transform lives every day. Together, we make a difference. To learn more about supporting the Food & Care Coalition, visit foodandcare.org or call 801-373-1825.
