Pleasant Grove residents living on the east side of the city in the Battle Creek zone have been issued a boil water order after E. coli bacteria was found in drinking water.

On Wednesday, the city was notified that one of three test samples tested positive for the bacteria.

“The specific testing was done as a result of one residence in that area testing positive for coliform bacteria during our routine monthly testing process of our culinary system,” the city leadership reported in a post on the city Facebook page and city website.

To protect the public’s safety and pursuant to the requirements of the state Division of Drinking Water, the city must issue the boil order to all utility customers within the Battle Creek service area, according to the city’s message.

The city has taken the following steps as a result of this positive test:

1. Notified the Utah Division of Drinking Water and worked to coordinate with the agency on its response and further testing.

2. Completed a Drinking Water Level 1 assessment of the system.

3. Chlorinated and flushed the water system in the affected area.

4. Performed additional testing.

5. Issued a boil order for businesses and homes located within the Battle Creek service area.

6. Plan to perform additional testing in the area to determine when the system will be cleared for consumption.

“The cause of the positive test has not been determined. The City will continue to take remedial action and conduct continued laboratory testing to monitor the system until the issue is resolved,” the statement said.

According to Public Works employees handling the numerous phone calls from residents, the city must receive two clean water test results, which take a minimum of 48 hours. That means the order will be in effect at least until Saturday.

The city has narrowed the issue to one location and believe it came from one of the city’s wells.

Pleasant Grove had a boil order last year, but in a different location in the city.

Updates will be posted to the Pleasant Grove City Facebook page.
