Just after noon on Tuesday, a large explosion and subsequent fire came from an apartment complex at 500 South and Main Street in Springville.
Two units of a six-unit north complex were completely lost. Several people have been displaced from both the north and south apartment complexes, according to police reports.
No one was in the apartment where the explosion occurred according to Lt. Warren Foster. A parent and child were in the unit next door, but both got out safely. No one else was harmed.
“Work had been done on the gas line and it had been shut off. When the gas was turned on is when the explosion occurred,” Foster said.
The Red Cross has been brought on site to help those displaced. According to Foster, there are, “quite a few people displaced.”
Those living in the two units will be displaced for an extended period of time, he noted. They are considered a complete loss.
Dominion Energy, as well as the State Fire Marshall and crews from Spanish Fork, Mapleton and Provo, assisted Springville fire crews throughout the afternoon.
The area between 400 South and 800 South and Main Street was closed for up to five hours while crews battled the flames and aided in the clean-up effort. The intersection at 400 South and Main is perhaps the busiest in Springville.
Foster said the rain did help some and protected surrounding dwellings.
The investigation will continue for some time according to Foster. In the meantime, all utilities are shut off to occupants in the complexes. It is not known when they will be allowed back into their apartments.
