The Utah Department of Transportation announced Friday that the most impactful projects of 2022 will be the Springville/Spanish Fork interchange and safety improvements along U.S. 189 in Provo Canyon.

These road upgrades are among the 175 construction projects UDOT currently has scheduled or in progress statewide, with a combined value of $2.5 billion.

“The projects are focused on meeting current and future transportation needs here in Utah — one of the fastest-growing states in the country — while keeping existing roads, bridges, sidewalks and trails in good condition,” according to a press release distributed by UDOT.

UDOT announced $79.1 million in construction along Interstate 15 in Utah County, which will include a new interchange between 400 South in Springville and Main Street in Spanish Fork, as well as the widening of 1600 South and 2700 North from Main Street in Spanish Fork to state Route 51.

This project will realign the adjacent frontage roads, as well as improve the flow of traffic along 1600 South and 2700 North, UDOT said.

“The new interchange will provide I-15 freeway access and alleviate congestion at the 400 South Interchange in Springville and on U.S. 6 in Spanish Fork,” the UDOT website says.

Construction is set to begin this summer and continue until 2025. A public hearing on the interchange was held in October 2020, and an environmental assessment conducted on the project in April 2021 found no significant environmental impact. More information on these projects can be found at udot.utah.gov/i15springvillespanishfork.

UDOT also announced $6.7 million in construction along U.S. 189 and U.S. 40 in Utah and Wasatch counties. This will include the replacement of sections of guardrail in Provo Canyon, as well as new concrete barriers and rumble strips at a section of U.S. 40 from 800 North in Heber to the intersection with state Route 32. This construction began in 2021 and is currently scheduled to finish this fall.

“We’re working hard to upgrade our transportation system statewide, and to keep our highways in good condition,” Rob Clayton, UDOT Region Three director, said in a press release. “These projects are designed to accommodate growth, improve safety and help people get where they want to go.”

As construction schedules are subject to change, UDOT has urged Utah County drivers to plan ahead and keep up to date on project information to reduce road delays. For current information on traffic restrictions during construction, visit udottraffic.utah.gov or download the UDOT Traffic app.
