Orem city's new logo, calling it "Family City USA."

Orem’s new Mayor David Young wants to make sure that residents, visitors and travelers passing through the city know that Orem is, and always will be, Family City USA.

While the designation has been used at various levels for nearly 40 years, the new council wants to not only revive it, but grow the Family City USA designation, to use it in logos and marketing promotions.

The name was given first in 1985. Summerfest, the June city celebration, was rebranded and called Family City USA for three years before it morphed into the SCERA Center for the Arts calendar of events that were under the umbrella of “Family City USA.”

Family City USA was a nonprofit set up by both the SCERA and city. The SCERA, under the direction of current President and CEO Adam Robertson, held on to the name and copyright for the city.

At Tuesday’s City Council work session, Pete Brooks and his marketing design team started a process to help the council envision a future with the new logo and theme.

Just like Provo has become well-known for its “Welcome Home” theme, Orem wants to do the same with “Family City USA.”

“The mayor and City Council want Orem to be a community where families thrive. One of their highest priorities is to strengthen neighborhoods,” said Steven Downs, deputy city manager.

The city plans to update logos, shirts, websites, social media channels, gateway signs and more to showcase “Family City USA.”

Orem’s median resident is 25 years old and 50% of people in the city are families with children under the age of 18. About 90% belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, according to the latest Census.

The city has been touted nationally as one of the best places to raise a family. Not only is it a major retail center and education destination with Utah Valley University, but families in the city live no further than a half-mile from one of the city’s 19 parks and play areas.

The council is hoping they could show off a new look on shirts at this year’s Summerfest, in the second week in June, but timing may not permit it. The Summerfest theme for this year is “Orem United.”

“Through our many city events, we hope to create experiences where neighbors, friends, and families come together to connect and develop lasting relationships. Orem isn’t just a place to live, it is an experience,” Downs said.

In the meantime, council members are thinking of ways to interject the new logo into as much marketing as they can. Decisions will be made in the coming weeks as to what that might look like.
