Utah County Sheriff’s detectives arrested Herriman resident Madeline Bernadette Lopez, 21, last week in connection with a domestic disturbance in Eagle Mountain.

The Daily Herald previously reported Lopez allegedly damaged the car of her ex-boyfriend and father of her 13-month-old child, and caused problems at an apartment where the ex-boyfriend lived.

“At the door she attempted to enter the apartment, but the victim inside would not open it,” Cannon wrote in a press release. “The victim told deputies Lopez was using an Electronic Incapacitation Device (EID) to shock the door handle. The victim opened the door just a crack and Lopez forcefully pushed the door open while the victim was holding their child.”

Lopez is being held at the Utah County Jail without bail for burglary of a dwelling, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, domestic violence in the presence of a child, criminal mischief and burglary of a vehicle. The burglary of a vehicle charges is new, said Sgt. Spencer Cannon, public information officer for the sheriff’s office.

“There were some personal items that belonged to the victim that were in the car, and he said they were in there just a short time before she damaged the car,” Cannon said. “They were not there after, and we believe she stole some credit cards and a gift card or something like that.”

Lopez didn’t resist when she was arrested Wednesday, and Cannon said she hasn’t spoken to law enforcement about her side of the events.

After leaving the scene of the alleged crimes, Lopez became very active on social media when the UCSO made a post about her on Facebook.

Cannon said she was located by detectives at her mother’s house.

“She was advised her Miranda rights and she did not want to talk,” Cannon said. “So, what we know of her explanation is basically what was said on Facebook or social media because she didn’t want to talk to us beyond what she had already said. We were hoping to get more of an explanation of things.

“What does seem clear though is that there is apparently a history there. They both need some help in dealing with stress and relationship issues and things like that. They don’t have good coping skills on how to adequately deal with the kinds of things that people deal with every day without fighting.”

UCSO is working with victim advocates and the Division of Child and Family Services to provide resources for the well-being of the child.

“There’s not any discussion at least at this point of taking the child from them, but they both need some parenting skills,” Cannon said. “I don’t think anybody who thinks about things reasonably would look at that situation and say that was a safe environment for the child, at least the way that (Lopez) was alleged to have been behaving at the time.”

Starting at $4.32/week.
