The Orem Police Department has apologized for a week-long delay between learning that a junior high teacher may have had inappropriate contact with children and informing the Alpine School District about the allegations.

According to an arrest affidavit, Andrew Walsh, 32, admitted during an interview with the Orem Police Department on Aug. 15 to exchanging nude images with a juvenile he knew was underage. But he returned to the teaching at Orem Junior High School until OPD informed the school district of the admission on Monday, the same day he was arrested on charges of sexual exploitation of a minor and enticing a minor by internet or text.

Walsh had been employed by Alpine School District since 2016 and, according to a district statement, was placed on administrative leave as soon as officials became aware of the accusations. He began teaching this year at Orem Junior High School.

In a statement Thursday, OPD acknowledged the delay between their interview with Walsh and communicating with Alpine officials.

“After a review of the recent arrest of a school teacher for enticement of a minor and possession of child pornography, it came to light that our agency failed to notify Alpine School District in a timely manner. Our agency is closely examining our procedures in order to (ensure) administrators are made aware of any incidents involving active employees as soon as possible. We look forward to our continued collaborative relationship with the Alpine School District in order to keep our schools safe and productive,” reads the statement.

Jami Dawson, Orem Junior High’s principal, emailed parents at the school to inform them of Walsh’s arrest.

“We want to make you aware that a faculty member is currently being investigated by law enforcement. As soon as we were notified of the teacher’s arrest he was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation. As far as we know, none of the allegations involve any of our students. We are cooperating with law enforcement regarding their investigation. Even though he was new to our school, the impact will still be felt by some students. News of this nature can be a concern, therefore we have supports available at school including counselors. Thank you for your understanding at this time,” reads the email.

Walsh is currently being held at the Utah County Jail.
