Sub for SantaEditor’s Note: This is one of many stories on families needing help this Christmas. As of Wednesday afternoon, the United Way of Utah County Sub for Santa program had 210 families still needing help. So far this holiday season, they have helped 1,900 families — 410 more than at this date last year.
Single mom Belinda has had a tough year and is unable to provide Christmas for her two children. One is 14 the other is just 8 months old.
“I was an addict and I’ve been clean 8 months. I relapsed when I was 5 months pregnant and went to detox and treatment right before I had my baby. I lost custody but I’ve since gotten it back,” Belinda said. She excited to report that the family is just about ready to move into their own place.
“My biggest challenge right now is finding day care so I can go back to work,” Belinda said. “I lack confidence in myself that I’ll be able to manage everything on my own.”
Belinda says she has learned the community is there to help and is grateful for that support and for Sub for Santa.
“The Sub for Santa program will help my family give my kids a Christmas they deserve, and a better Christmas than the ones they’ve had in the past,” she said. “It helps take the stress off not being able to give them the Christmas I would like them to have. I am very blessed this year and thankful to everyone who has helped me along the way.”
The oldest child is female, age 14. She needs socks, underwear and pajamas. She wears a pant size 8 and shirt size L. Her shoe size is a 7 and her favorite color is black. For books she would like the “Harry Potter” series and “Mortal Instruments” series by Cassandra Clare. She would like perfume and makeup, a fast food gift card and room LED lights.
The youngest is a male, just 8 months old. He needs pants, shirts and socks. He wears a size 6-9 month and his favorite colors are blue and green. Belinda would like him to have baby board books and books on dinosaurs. He would enjoy noisy baby toys, a play mat, teething toys and toys for the bathtub.
