Members of the Orem Fire department receive a $5,000 grant check from State Farm Insurance.

Orem’s firefighters and EMTs don’t just ride around in big red trucks all day, most of them spend hours training for emergency events.

That is why it is helpful, and sometimes necessary, that organizations like State Farm Insurance step in to help for education programs.

State Farm alerted the department that the American Heart Association has a Resuscitation Quality Improvement program that helps with that training and provided financial assistance for firefighters to go through the program.

To help with the cost of training department employees, the Orem Fire Department received a check for $5,000 through a grant from the company. The check was delivered on July 12.

“This grant will help offset the costs of our RQI Program,” said Lon Meyers, assistant chief over EMTs.

The RQI is a performance improvement program that delivers quarterly training, rather than on a traditional bi-annual basis, according to Myers.

The Resuscitation Quality Improvement Program focuses on training delivered on a more consistent basis and is accompanied with the quarterly schedule supporting mastery of high-quality CPR, along with increased efficiency in running mega codes and life-saving patient care.

“The end goal is to better prepare and train our people so more of those we treat walk out of the hospital,” Myers added. “The City of Orem Fire Department is extremely thankful to State Farm’s Jordan Hardy for reaching out to the department regarding this opportunity.”
