With the first batch of results in across Utah County, voters have chosen to scrap Alpine School District’s $595 million bond. According to the preliminary election results, 46.84% of voters supported the bond issuance, while 53.16% were opposed.

These results are in contrast to the Bond Viability Survey conducted earlier this year by Y2 Analytics, which found that 61% of those surveyed in a random sample of 1,641 likely voters within Alpine School District boundaries from May 15-31 would likely vote in favor of the bond.

“As the election results have been released, Alpine School District expresses appreciation to those who have taken the time to study the 2022 bond proposal and vote.” Read a statement from ASD. “While the bond did not pass, we will continue our commitment and efforts to address the need for additional schools, building renovations, and safety/security improvements for students throughout our communities.”

As Utah’s largest school district, with 83,999 enrolled students as of October 2021, Alpine is responsible for handling increased growth in Lehi, Vineyard, Saratoga Springs, and Eagle Mountain. According to the Bond Viability Study, enrollment numbers are only expected to go up — the district is projected to grow by more than 2,500 students by 2027.

Funds for the bond were to be used to construct 6 new schools throughout Saratoga Springs, Lehi, and Eagle Mountain, complete six school rebuilds, and renovations, and fund three safety, security, and land acquisition projects.

The bond proposed this year was significantly more than the last bond set by the district in 2016, which was for $387 million. That funding was used to complete 22 capital projects, including constructing Cedar Valley High School, two middle schools, and seven elementary schools.
