Alpine School District employees hold a check from Cenergistic for reducing energy consumption at the Alpine School District office in American Fork on March 28, 2023.

With 86 traditional schools, seven special purpose schools, additional learning programs, hundreds of employees and over 82,000 students, Alpine School District is the state’s largest school district and uses significant amounts of energy. On March 28, the district was recognized, though, for their commitment to using clean energy sources.

Sean Monroe, senior vice president of Cenergistic, presented the school board with the company’s Best in Class award for clean energy, saying they have done, “something other districts across the country have strived to achieve,” Monroe said.

ASD director of operations Kimberly Bird said the district is learning to “maximize the best use of our facilities, no matter their age” thanks to their partnership with Cenergistic. The district has 93 facilities with the oldest having been built in 1950.

Cenergistic is a Texas-based conservation company that focuses on helping school districts, higher education institutions and local governments optimize utilities and save energy. According to the company, the district saw a 22% energy use reduction over the past five years, saving over $9.6 million and reducing carbon emissions equal to 133,220,425 miles driven by the average car. Monroe added that this equated to “15% in total cost savings.”

“It is my honor to present the Alpine School District with our Best in Class Award banner, to recognize their conservation efforts of our nation’s precious resources by implementing our program, optimizing energy performance, and serving as a model of energy stewardship to school districts across the state of Utah and across the country. Lastly, as part of the best in class awards, Cenergistic is donating $7,500 to your Alpine School District Foundation for scholarship money,” Monroe said.

The district received the Cenergistic Energy Excellence Award in 2020 for reducing energy consumption in the district by 16%, obtaining Energy Star certification for 60 facilities.

“It seems simple, but it takes small intentional routines by each employee to accomplish a reduction of 22% use of energy. Part of this accomplishment should be attributed to our employees who conscientiously follow energy-efficient guidelines shared across the district with all building custodians, leadership teams, teachers and staff,” Bird said. “We are grateful for our partnership with Cenergistic and hope to see continued progress with energy savings.”
