A Nebo School District teacher was arrested Wednesday for allegedly striking a student — an act reportedly caught on video — after teaching while under the influence of alcohol.
Carlos Alfredo Castillo, 61, of Payson, was booked into the Utah County Jail on suspicion of several class B misdemeanors including child abuse and driving under the influence.
An officer arriving at the unnamed school located Castillo inside a running vehicle in the parking lot, according to a probable cause statement.
“I detected an odor of an alcohol beverage coming from Carlos mouth as we spoke,” the officer reported. “I asked Carlos if he had drank alcohol and he stated he had. Carlos stated he had a few drinks earlier in the morning.”
Castillo was arrested by the Salem Police Department and released from the jail within hours.
According to police documents, he was the only person in the car at the time of the police interaction.
Further details were not immediately available.
