No one harmed in Spanish Fork plane fire Thursday evening

A small plane burns after an emergency landing at the Spanish Fork Airport on Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023. The two occupants inside were uninjured.

Two occupants are unharmed after their small plane made an emergency landing at the Spanish Fork Airport due to an engine fire Thursday evening.

The plane was at an altitude of about 10,000 feet over Utah Lake when the engine fire began, according to a press release from Spanish Fork City.

Spanish Fork Fire & EMS responded to the airport at around 5 p.m. and were able to extinguish the plane, which was fully engulfed by that time, in about 25 minutes.

According to the press release, the pilot heard a bang and then the cockpit filled with smoke. The pilot then made a mayday call and landed at the Spanish Fork Airport.

After landing, both people in the plane were able to exit safely before the aircraft was fully engulfed. The aircraft was completely destroyed at an estimated damage cost of $300,000.

The National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating the cause of the fire. The Utah County Sheriff’s Office, Spanish Fork Police, Mapleton EMS and Central Utah 911 also assisted with the call.
