As summer gets underway, candidates for municipal office have their eyes on the fall. On this year’s general election ballot, Provo voters will decide who will hold four seats on the Municipal Council. The primary election will be held Sept. 5, but voters will have an opportunity to hear from the candidates on Thursday.
The forum will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Bullock Room of the Provo City Library and is hosted by Utah Rep. Tyler Clancy, a first-term legislator who represents a large swath of Provo — east of State Street and, generally, between 2620 North and 300 North.
“An informed electorate is crucial for a thriving republic. This forum provides a platform for our neighbors to actively participate in the political process and make informed decisions come election day,” Clancy said in a press release. “My hope in hosting this event is to facilitate open dialogue between the prospective candidates and the citizens of Provo, build community trust, and create a more responsive government.”
There are 13 total candidates seeking four open seats with only one incumbent seeking reelection.
In District 1, Craig Christensen and Stan Jensen are seeking the seat currently held by Bill Fillmore. The candidates for the District 3 seat, currently held by Shannon Ellsworth, are David Lewis and Becky Bogdin. Incumbent council member Travis Hoban is the only candidate for District 4.

Council member David Shipley is not running for reelection for the City Wide II seat. The eight candidates seeking to replace him are: Joseph Penrose, Beth Hedengren, Ari Emmanuel Webb, Gary Garrett, Wendy Ahlman, Tanner Bennett, McKay Jensen and Nathan Smith Jones.
“The event will allow candidates to address key topics, respond to questions from the audience, and present their ideas on how to improve the community. Candidates will have tables set up for further discussion following the event,” reads the press release. It is free and open to the public.
Editor’s Note: This article has been updated to reflect that council member David Shipley is not running for re-election, not Katrice MacKay. The primary election will also be held Sept. 5, not Aug. 15.
