A Springville police vehicle is pictured Saturday, May 26, 2018.

The Springville Police Department identified the man killed in a Sunday morning altercation with officers as Mathew Scott Nielsen, 46.

Nielsen, of Springville, was shot and killed after exchanging gunfire with two police officers. Police did not release the names of the officers involved and the investigation by the Utah County Officer Involved Critical Incident Team is still ongoing.

According to the police department, multiple calls reported “what (sounded) like gunshots” in rapid succession early Sunday. While searching the area, a Springville officer approached what police say he believed was a traffic accident near 1200 West and 1000 North.

The man fired gunshots at the approaching officer, Lt. Warren Foster told the Daily Herald. Multiple gunshots reportedly hit the police vehicle as a second Springville officer arrived to the scene.

According to Foster, both officers shot the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene after officers reported rendering medical aid.

One officer was injured in the shooting and was brought to Utah Valley Hospital.
