U.S. Sen. Mike Lee speaks at a Veterans Day celebration at Timpview High School in Provo on Monday, Nov. 11, 2019.

It used to be called Armistice Day, celebrating the armistice ending World War I. It became a national holiday in 1938 and today it is called Veterans Day, honoring all veterans who have served their country.

To keep this history in the minds and hearts of residents, the Provo Veterans Council, Timpview High School and the Freedom Festival are holding their annual salute to veterans at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Timpview Thunderdome basketball arena. The public is invited with the program lasting about one hour.

This year will feature Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi opening the program with music by the Timpview band and a special performance by the Timpview dance team.

Fourth District Court Judge Lynn Davis will be the keynote speaker with two special surprise recognitions going to members of the military connected to Timpview.

“It’s a delightful hour,” said Paul Warner, with the Freedom Festival. “It’s really something the city should attend.”

The Timpview High School student body officers will greet veterans coming to the school for the event. Following the program, Costa Vida will serve a free lunch to all veterans.
