A Lehi man being held in connection with the death of his wife died in a local hospital Saturday while being treated for medical conditions he experienced while in custody, according to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office.
Ronald Morgan, 85, was arrested Friday on suspicion of murdering his wife, Dora Webb, 83.
According to a probable cause statement, the victim was found in a bedroom of the couple’s home. Morgan reportedly was found by Lehi police officers covered in blood and exclaimed that he had killed his wife.
Morgan was taken to the hospital to be checked and reportedly made additional comments that he was exhausted because “what he had done wasn’t as easy as shooting her,” the police affidavit states.
He later was cleared and taken to the Lehi Police Department to be interrogated.
According to the police report, Morgan told officers he had punched, stomped on and strangled Webb. He also said he grabbed his wife and used multiple items to hit or bludgeon the her head.
He was arrested on suspicion of aggravated murder and taken to the Utah County Jail. Due to unspecified medical conditions, deputies took Morgan to Utah Valley Hospital, where he died Saturday.
According to sheriff’s office spokesperson Sgt. Spencer Cannon, Morgan’s death is considered an in-custody death. “We have a very competent medical staff. Sometime Saturday morning, they called for a nurse to check on Morgan (and) they called for an ambulance,” he said.
The county’s Officer Involved Critical Incident Team is investigating Morgan’s death. Cannon said the cause is unknown and will be determined in the coming weeks by the medical examiner’s office.
